Physical Therapy in Connecticut Schools: Best Practices and Resources

Executive Summary

 

Overview 

This document provides updated school physical therapy practice guidelines in the areas of student identification and referral, assessment, intervention, documentation and discharge.  

 

Highlights 

This document: 

  • Describes the role of the physical therapist in the educational setting 
  • Applies the concepts of the World Health Organization’s International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health for Children and Youth (ICF-CY) model to school physical therapy practice 
  • Bridges the professional standards of physical therapy practice with those of education practice by integrating and applying principles and requirements from the following: 
    • Connecticut Physical Therapy Practice Act;
    • American Physical Therapy Association Guidelines;
    • Academy of Pediatric Physical Therapy recommendations;
    • Connecticut Special Education Law; and
    • Federal educational law (Individuals with Disability Education Act, Americans with Disabilities Act, and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act).   
  • Describes options for physical therapy service delivery models 
  • Provides active links for more information about processes and resources. 

 

How Will These Guidelines Affect Practice? 

This document provides information about integrating the physical therapy profession into the educational setting including a framework, facts, best practice recommendations, and resources to assist physical therapists functioning as related service providers in schools.  

The information contained in the document, along with links to primary sources, will assist all educational stakeholders including physical therapists to better understand how to integrate physical therapy services into the educational setting, make decisions regarding physical therapy services, and provide physical therapy in a manner consistent with best practice in the school settings.
