Physical Therapist Management of Individuals with Parkinson’s Disease: A clinical conversation on the implementation of CPG recommendations into practice

Presenters:

Cristina Colon Semenza, Suzanne Rodriguez and Dorothy Villano

The Clinical Practice Guideline (CPG) for the Physical Therapist Management of Parkinson’s Disease was published in 2022 to provide evidence-based recommendations to clinicians to aid in the implementation of the most efficient and effective practice for individuals living with Parkinson’s disease. In this collaborative presentation with the CT APTA’s Neurologic and Geriatric Special Interest Groups, experts will review the clinical presentation of Parkinson’s disease, the CPG recommendations, and the implementation of current best practice guidelines in the treatment of individuals with Parkinson’s disease throughout the progression of the disease process. This session will focus on the case-based application of the CPG to provide clinicians with actionable treatment strategies and ideas to implement into the clinic. There will be time at the end of the session for discussion and clinical questions with one of the CPG’s authors, Cristina Colon-Semenza!

Objectives
1. Describe the typical clinical presentation of patients with Parkinson’s disease
2. Define the CPG recommendations for patients with Parkinson’s disease
3. Apply CPG recommendations to clinical scenarios dependent on the patient’s stage of disease
4. Construct an action plan for incorporation of the CPG recommendations into their own clinical practice
