This presentation will help to improve your understanding in skilled maintenance physical therapy for your clients with neurological challenges in the implementation of care and documentation to support it.
Objectives
  • To understand the history behind Skilled Maintenance: Jimmo v. Sebelius
  • To understand the difference between restorative and maintenance
  • To understand differences between maintenance, prevention, slow decline or deterioration to ensure that services are safe and effective.
  • To understand that Medicare does recognize skilled maintenance and what your documentation should include to support it.
  • Provide actual patient scenarios and active participation in learning.

 Presenter, Karleen Cordeau, PT, MS is a physical therapist of 34 years with a masters in health care administration. She brings education from direct patient care, operational management, consulting, business development, collegiate education and company ownership. She currently serves as Practice Chair of APTA CT with past national participation as Public Relations Chair of APTA Geriatrics. Areas of payment, policy and practice have been a large area of concentration through her years. Served on the board for University of Connecticut in the implementation and progression of the DPT program. Offered education/training and consulting to many companies on policy and practice in areas of outpatient, skilled nursing and homecare. She has served as physical therapy consultant to MAC Jurisdiction K. The Center for Medicare Advocacy asked her to represent physical therapy with respect to Jimmo v. Sebelius and traveled to the United States Capital for a project to form a plan of national implementation. Karleen recognizes that clinicians should be strong and confident in their knowledge and tools to meet external requirements so that care is not sacrificed.
