A participatory lecture and lab experience to introduce physical therapists to the evidence and elements of Tai Chi. Learn basic postures, stances and stepping sequences that can be incorporated into physical therapy treatment to improve balance, gait and reduce fall risk.

 

Objectives
A) Define Tai Chi: a brief review of the history of Tai Chi and how it is evolving
B) Review the current literature: what is the evidence for Tai Chi in reducing fall risk, fall prevention, health and wellness.
C) Learn about the elements of Tai Chi and how these elements can be incorporated into current clinical approaches to balance, gait and fall risk reduction in older adults.
D) Learn the basic stances and stepping that can be immediately applied in balance and gait training in patients, particularly with Parkinson’s disease.
