Join us for a round table discussion surrounding the importance of strength and conditioning on injury prevention and optimizing performance with return to sport. This presentation hosts a multi-disciplinary team of sports medicine practitioners and includes time for Q & A and interactive discussion with all participants.

  1. Discuss the importance of off-season strength and conditioning on injury prevention/risk reduction
  2. Recognize challenges of strength and conditioning during a pandemic and discuss creative solutions
  1. Understand the importance of collaboration within a multidisciplinary team
  2. Identify assessment strategies to help determine safe return to play after injury
  3. Understand foundational principles of strength training with regard to sport specific demands
  4. Highlight the basics of energy system development with regard to sport specific demands

 

About the Speakers:

Karen Sutton MD (Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine)

Dr. Sutton is a board-certified sports medicine surgeon with surgical expertise in arthroscopy of the shoulder, knee and hip. She is an Associate Attending Orthopedic Surgeon at Hospital for Special Surgery and a member of the Sports Medicine Institute and Women’s Sports Medicine Center at HSS. She is also Chief Medical Officer for World Lacrosse and Team Physician for US Ski & Snowboard.

Dr. Sutton's passion for sports medicine stems from her years playing lacrosse at Duke University where she was Team Captain for 3 years, Regional All-American, Academic All-American, and led her team to the Final Four. As Head Team Physician of US Women's Lacrosse, Dr. Sutton is responsible for providing care for National Team athletes. She was elected to the Sports, Science and Safety Committee for United States Lacrosse where she advises the Board of US Lacrosse on injury prevention and management. She has also been working with Darien Lacrosse and Fairfield Ludlow Lacrosse in Connecticut. She also served as Team Physician for Yale University Athletics, Albertus Magnus College and the professional Women's Tennis Association (WTA). During her fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard School of Medicine, she assisted in the orthopedic care of the Boston Red Sox, the Boston Bruins and the New England Revolution.

A national authority on sports injuries and prevention, Dr. Sutton has worked with various news outlets such as NBC Universal, ESPN-W, WFAN radio, WTNH, WYBC and News 12 Connecticut. She has made substantial contributions to research, publishing over 30 publications and giving over 80 presentations on topics from anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction to treating the female athlete to shoulder issues in breast cancer. Dr. Sutton is also an elected member of the American Orthopaedic Association, acknowledging scholarship in orthopedic surgery. She serves on multiple committees on the American Orthopaedic Society of Sports Medicine. She is a reviewer of leading orthopedic journals, including The American Journal of Sports Medicine, The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, and The Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery.

Dr. Sutton began her academic career at Duke University, where she earned her undergraduate degree in biochemistry, graduating with distinction. She earned her medical degree at University of Maryland. She completed her orthopedic surgery residency at Yale University School of Medicine followed by fellowships in sports medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard School of Medicine and pediatric sports medicine at Boston Children's Hospital/Harvard School of Medicine. She was an Associate Professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Yale University.

 

Jim Ronai MSPT, ATC, CSCS

Jim Ronai holds a master’s degree in physical therapy from Springfield College and has been in practice as a licensed physical therapist for 30 years. Additionally, Ronai is a Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) through the National Athletic Trainer’s Association (NATA), as well as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). 

Ronai’s vast experience in orthopedics and sports medicine includes work with multiple High School, College, Professional and Olympic teams and athletes. He has served as a consultant for The USA Baseball Medical & Safety Advisory Committee since 2000 and has been a consultant for the Colorado Rockies Baseball Club and The New York Islanders/Bridgeport Sound Tigers Hockey Teams. Ronai served as an athletic trainer for the 2002 and 2006 Winter Olympic Teams where his bobsled and skeleton athletes brought home gold and silver medals! His Olympic path also included work with athletes from the USA hockey, skating and skiing teams.

Currently, Ronai is a member of the Yale Strength and Conditioning staff. He is the Women's Crew Strength and Conditioning Coach and is a speed, strength and mobility Coach for  the Football & Men's Lacrosse teams.

A lifelong resident of Orange, Ronai has remained active in the Orange community.  He started the Orange Elementary Olympic Festival, has been active in coaching various youth sports and is an active member of the Orange Park and Recreation Commission.

 

Zito Corte-Real CSCS, FRCms:

Zito is the director of strength and conditioning at Goal Physiotherapy and Sports Performance in Westport CT. Zito has been an athlete his entire life and draws from many of his experiences in working together with the GOAL community. 

Through his career and vast experience, Zito has developed a deep interest in mobility training and athletic performance training. At GOAL, Zito works with both active adults and our high school, collegiate and professional athletes to meet their performance goals.  

Zito graduated from Southern Connecticut State University with a bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science with a concentration in Human Performance. He has spent his early career learning from some of the top minds in the training industry, working with athletes and clients of all ages. Zito is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), as well as FRCms (Functional Range Conditioning, mobility specialist).  

Zito grew up playing soccer since the age of 5. He played youth and premier soccer for Beachside Soccer Club in Westport, CT and eventually professionally, overseas for Sporting club of Portugal. He was sidelined with numerous knee injuries which eventually sparked his coaching career. In his spare time, he enjoys being outside, playing soccer, and spending time with his family, friends and dog.  

 

Shane Foley DPT, OCS, CSCS, FDN, BSPTS:

Shane is the Director of Performance Physical Therapy in Greenwich CT. He holds both his bachelor’s degree in biology and doctorate in physical therapy from Sacred Heart University.

Shane has a deep passion for building relationships, helping people accomplish their goals and leading people to optimize their performance. Shane combines his advanced research, knowledge and skills as an orthopedic specialist along with his background as a certified strength and conditioning specialist to provide the optimal analysis for his patients: he analyzes and helps people across the full spectrum of health care, from injury to improved performance.

Shane’s area of expertise include the Schroth Method and functional dry needling. He is also passionate about helping his patients return to sport following an injury, using a criterion-based series of tests to ensure that when an athlete is ready to resume play, they have a little risk of re-injury as possible with optimal performance.

When not in the clinic, you can find Shane in nature either hiking or seeking out good wind to kiteboard, fresh powder to snowboard or calm tides to paddle board.
