Shantel Firpi Szymanski PT, Board Certified Neurologic Physical Therapy Clinical Specialist

Hartford Healthcare Rehab Network

Neurological Rehabilitation Program Manager for Hartford Healthcare

Secretary for the APTA CT Neurology SIG.

Where did you go to PT/PTA school?

University Of Connecticut.

What made you want to become a PT or PTA?

My love for Physical Therapy started at an early age. When I was in Kindergarten, my mother and I were in a car accident with a bus. In the months following the accident, I would attend her physical therapy sessions with her. I remember thinking it was such a fun job where you could exercise and help people. My calling was confirmed when I was in high school, and my uncle who is a firefighter sustained severe injuries after a roof collapsed on him in a fire. I saw how such a catastrophic injury can change your whole life. Through working with a skilled Physical Therapist he slowly gained function, returned to work and the things that he loved. I knew then that for the rest of my life I wanted to help people get back to living theirs.

Why are you an APTA member?

I am a proud APTA member because it’s important to support an organization that continues to advocate for our profession and advance our practice. The Academy of Neurologic Physical Therapy has released many resources that help to guide my practice and to ensure I am following evidence based guidelines. The CPGs, CEU’s, SIGs and podcasts offer many ways to stay up to date on the latest research and resources that can fit our busy schedules and lives. It’s a great way to connect with other therapists and network.

When you're not working what do you like to do in your free time?

Family time with my toddler, and some amateur photography
