Mulligan Concept for Treatment of Mechanical Derangement of Lumbar Spine
Course Description-This course will provide the participant with a learning experience in the Cyriax approach in examination of the lumbar spine followed by the Mulligan approach in the treatment of mechanical low back pain. Teaching methods will include demonstration, hands on lab practice and a mock lab.
Educational Objectives
Upon completion of this course the participant shall be able to:
- Perform the lumbar examination and identify a patient who is a candidate for the Mulligan approach.
- Explain what a Sustained Natural Apophyseal Glide (SNAG) is.
- Demonstrate good verbal communication with a patient in order to employ SNAG.
- List the guidelines for providing a safe and therapeutic SNAG.
- Employ SNAGS to improve lumbar articular signs and dural signs.
- Teach a patient how to perform Mulligan self- reduction techniques
- Given a patient navigate through a treatment algorithm

8:30-9:00 Demonstration of the lumbar spine examination
9:00-10:00 Lab practice and question and answer session of the lumbar examination
10:00-10:15 Break
10:15-10:30 Description and principles of SNAGS
10:30-12:00- Demonstration and lab Practice for lumbar SNAGS performed in the sitting position and introduction to standing SNAGS
12:00-1:00 Lunch (included with registration)
1:00-1:30 Complete SNAG lab
1:30-2:30 Demonstration and lab practice for lumbar SNAGS specifically designs for dural signs
2:30-2:45 Break
2:45-4:00 Demonstration and lab practice for lion stretch, self traction, and self snags followed by a discussion of a treatment algorithm
Presenters:
Russell Woodman PT MS DPT FSOM OCS MCTA is professor emeritus at Quinnipiac University, where he still teaches part time. He also practices at three out- patient clinics in the New Haven area. In 1981, Dr. Cyriax awarded him full teaching membership in the British Society of Orthopaedic Medicine. He has been an APTA board certified orthopaedic specialist since 1988. In 1996 under the tutorial of Brian Mulligan, he was accredited as an instructor in the Mulligan Concept Teachers Association. Professor Woodman has authored numerous articles on orthopaedic physical therapy and has taught continuing education courses since 1980.
Patricia Black PT, MS, MCTA completed her undergrad at Boston University in Physical Therapy and completed her Masters in Orthopedics at Quinniapac University. She has been a Mulligan instructor since 2001.
